Hegenderfer House of Cocktails
Steve's Modern Old Fashioned in a rocks glass over a large cube, with an orange peel

Your ice is the problem

You bought the good bourbon. You measured carefully. Then you ruined it with freezer ice that tastes like a frozen pizza.

Ice is an ingredient. It is roughly a quarter of what ends up in the glass, and most people give it less thought than the napkin.

Freezer ice absorbs everything around it. If there is a bag of frozen peas in there, congratulations, your Old Fashioned has notes of frozen peas.

You do not need a fancy mould. You need fresh ice, made recently, kept away from food. That is the whole tip. You may now go back to arguing about vermouth.
