Gold Rush
old-fashioned · bourbon
Honey stands in for the sugar in what would otherwise be a whiskey sour, and it turns to rock on contact with ice, so thin it two parts to one with hot water first. The grapefruit peel shakes with everything else rather than sitting pretty on top. There's a note about trying ginger that I remember only after shaking.
Ingredients
- 2 ozbourbon
- ¾ ozlemon juice
- ¾ ozhoney syrup — see notes for homemade honey syrup instructions
- 1 x 2 inchgrapefruit peel — take care to get as little of the white pith as possible
Garnish
Lemon wheel or peel
Method
Add all ingredients, including grapefruit peel, to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake hard over ice for 8 to 10 seconds, and strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a lemon wheel or peel.
Steve’s notes
Small note: some ginger added with the honey syrup might go well. Homemade honey syrup: honey turns into a rock when it hits ice, so make a syrup out of it before using it in a cocktail. Combine two parts honey to one part hot or boiling water (measuring by weight is more precise, since honey is hard to measure by volume) and stir to combine.
