Apple brandy is the deciding vote, pulling the whiskeys and the Cognac into one spirit instead of a pileup. Keep the pours equal — go heavy on any of them and whichever one won does all the talking. It builds right in the glass, which is why I make these for people who can't agree on a bottle.

Ingredients

• ½ ozapple brandy
• ½ ozrye
• ½ ozbourbon
• ½ ozCognac — in a pinch, substitute Sherry (or other) - especially when cold
• 2 barspoonsdemerara syrup
• 2 dashesbitters
• 1 dashMexican chocolate bitters
• —apple slice — garnish

Garnish

Apple wedge (or orange or lemon twist)

Method

Build directly in your highball glass and add ice. Garnish with an apple wedge (or use orange or lemon twist).
