Next to the vodka-and-cranberry version they pour at every pool bar, this one is drier and considerably pinker. Stir the grenadine into the gin before the ice goes in, or it settles at the bottom and stays there. Make the grenadine yourself — it keeps a month, which I have never once tested.

Method

In a highball glass, add gin and grenadine and stir. Add ice and top with pink grapefruit juice.

Steve’s notes

Homemade grenadine: Add equal-parts pomegranate juice and sugar into a saucepan on low heat and simmer until sugar dissolves. Strain into a jar and seal tightly with lid. Will keep in the refrigerator for one month.
