Ingredients: 2 oz Bourbon or rye; 1 oz Sweet vermouth; 2 dashes Angostura bitters; 1 dash Orange bitters; Brandied cherry

Next to an Old Fashioned, the whole difference is vermouth — whiskey sweetened versus whiskey talked to. Two to one, and that vermouth has to be fresh; it's wine, and a tired bottle is what's wrong with most of these you've been served. Mine lives in the fridge and I still owe a few bottles an apology.
